Presentation: “Three Trips to Sable Island from your Museum Seat”
Where & When:
Tuesday, May 29th, 2018 at 7pm
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
1675 Lower Water Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
We invite you to experience three different perspectives of Sable Island from the safety and comfort of a seat in the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. You’ll enjoy stories of the island told by a first-time visitor, a person who worked and lived there with his family in the summers during the 1970s, and an historian whose ancestors resided on Sable Island. Friends of Sable Island Society is celebrating 20 years of dedicated care for the future of this fabled place by offering these quick visual trips and tales about Canada’s 43rd National Park Reserve.
Within our culture, it is each generation’s duty to keep alive the stories of those iconic places in our nation’s history as well their unique geography. Since 1801, Nova Scotia has protected Sable Island in order to protect human life, and to preserve its wildlife and this fragile sandbar for the enjoyment of future generations. Due to the positive reputation of Friends of Sable Island Society and strong public interest, Sable Island continues to capture the imagination of Canada and indeed the world. Alison DeLory is the neophyte, representing those people who dream of going to the island and climbing a dune. Terry Hennigar’s family was one of the few that lived on the island. The Hennigars spent summers there while Terry conducted scientific studies on the amazing freshwater lens beneath the island in the middle of the North Atlantic. Jill Martin brings the historical perspective tracing back to the story of her family who lived on the island when lifesaving was the primary activity. Their separate but ultimately similar stories serve to instill a love of this unique natural and historical gem and the will to preserve it forever.
All are welcome to attend. There is no charge for this event; entrance to the museum is free after 5pm. Please plan to stay for conversation with the presenters and other attendees afterwards. Memberships in Friends of Sable Island Society, and products in support of ongoing programs, will be available for purchase.
