SI2019-B-2: Hard Times of Sable Island: The Darby Controversy – Rebecca Wilson

Living and working on Sable Island is not for the faint of heart in modern times; can you imagine how it was in the 1850s? The survival of the islanders depended on the leadership and decision-making of the superintendent, who was a government employee. Captain Joseph Darby was dismissed as superintendent of Sable Island in the late 1850s in an ugly and lengthy trial after a 40+ year career. In this talk, we will explore some of the charges laid against him to glimpse into the everyday challenges of life on Sable, and to better understand the truth behind Joseph Darby’s tarnished legacy.
