We are very pleased to announce the details of our 2019 scholarship! Have you always wanted to visit this fabled Island sometimes called “The Graveyard of the Atlantic”? In addition to receiving $1000 towards their post-secondary education, the winning student will also spend a day on the Sable Island National Park Reserve (NPR) as a volunteer with Parks Canada!
Parks Canada and the Friends of Sable Island Society entered a partnering agreement to strengthen the “Friends of Sable Island Society Scholarship” by offering an opportunity for the award recipient to visit the Island as a Parks Canada volunteer. As part of the partnering agreement, Parks Canada and the Friends of Sable Island Society will work together to help Canadians connect with Sable Island NPR and learn more about the Island’s cultural heritage and natural history.
Grade 12 students in Nova Scotia who plan to attend a post-secondary educational institution in the fall of 2019 are invited to apply. The main submission is a 3-5 minute video on the topic of shipwrecks and/or the life-saving role of Sable Island. The video is expected to hold the attention of students in Grades 3-5 and combine elements of both history and science. The video will be evaluated from the perspective of a potential teaching aid for use by teachers in a lesson plan.
The deadline for applications is 11:59pm on Tuesday April 30, 2019.
Full details and the application form are available at Scholarship 2019.
Questions and submissions should be sent to scholarships@sableislandfriends.ca.
