Petroleum exploration offshore Nova Scotia began in 1959. Since that time a total of 209 wells have been drilled offshore Nova Scotia of which 129 were exploration wells. Many of these wells and almost all significant oil and gas discoveries to date are located within 60 kilometres of Sable Island. The CNSOPB will provide an overview of offshore activities to date including the current regulatory framework for oil and gas exploration and production. The CNSOPB will also speak about the recent legislative changes to ensure further protection of Sable Island.
