Confirmed presentation for Saturday October 21st: “Mysterious Denizens of the Deep: The Northern Bottlenose Whales of the Sable Gully”
One of the world’s deepest diving mammals is the Northern Bottlenose Whale, a species found in Sable Gully. Laura Joan Feyrer is the Chief Scientist on the Northern Bottlenose Project and a PhD candidate. Her current research focuses on assessing the population structure, trends and management of endangered northern bottlenose whales in Canada. She has spent the last three summers collecting field data from a 40′ sailboat and will be sharing some stories from the history of the Whitehead Lab’s whale research in the Sable Gully, a submarine canyon and marine protected area 50 km east of Sable Island.
