It’s always exciting when an unexpected collaboration opportunity results in something beautiful and practical like this Sable Island tote bag!
During planning for Sable Island Conference 2023, Elizabeth (Liz) Bateman offered her artistic talents as well as her scientific research to help raise awareness about what makes the island so special. The result is an attractive and sturdy cloth bag starring a Sable Island horse nose-to-nose with a seal. Take a “piece” of Sable Island with you wherever you go!

In her bio for a presentation on “Tracking the Movements, Migrations, and Seasonal Residency of Atlantic Halibut (Hippoglossus) in the Sable Gully” Liz shared
“I have been fascinated by Sable Island since I was a kid, and although I never had a chance to set foot on the dunes, I was fortunate enough to find myself working at sea on a project that took me out to the Gully within sight of the island. This unique, rugged slice of land inspires so much awe and it is a dream come true to be studying a facet of this system’s marine ecology.”
Abbie Branchflower, board member and Director of Education for Friends of Sable Island, worked with Liz on a the custom design. Using some of Abbie’s photographs as inspiration, Liz illustrated an interaction between two iconic Sable Island species.
The bags were printed by Golden Silkscreen and Embroidery in Lakeside, Nova Scotia and are a great way of supporting local talent for your holiday shopping. All proceeds from the sales of these bags go directly back to our educational initiatives.
